TRANSPORTATION
Roads:
Highways in Taiwan are grouped into four.
- National Highways
- Provincial Highways
- County Routes
- Township Routes
The national highways serve as routes inter-connecting to major cities and there are said to be seven in number. The national highways are under the care of the National Freeway Bureau. The speed limits range from 70km/h to 110km/h depending on the highway involved. Speed limits are monitored through radar activated cameras.
There are a couple of tunnels used in Taiwan. The hsuehshan tunnel amongst others still exists. Tunnels have rules and regulations guiding their usage. Along with the normal highway rules guiding the highways and other road network, vehicles traveling through tunnels are to put on their head lamps at all times.
The tolling system of Taiwan requires toll users to pay tolls at specific places on a freeway. Signs are placed on a highway indicating a toll station is up ahead.
Railroads:
The rail system of transportation is also well-established in Taiwan. As of 2003, there was around 1496km of rail road so almost all parts of the island have one form of railway transportation. The Taiwan high speed rail was commissioned on January 2007. This high speed rail connects the north east part of the island to the south west part. The use of this new form of rail transportation has cut short the time its takes to travel the north east to the south west or vice-versa from 4hours to just 90mins of travel time. The railway system in Taiwan continues to expand as the days go by. The conventional rails are already in place but faster forms of rail are planned to be built in replacement.
In quite a short time Taipei is developing a network of 4 conventional mainly underground metro lines and 1 automated elevated light rail metro line to relieve the city from traffic congestion.
Aviation:
The Taiwan air transport industry is quite vibrant with a lot of air traffic going on. Taiwan has a total of 18 airports. The Taoyuan Airport is by far the busiest airport in the whole of Taiwan and it entertains the highest number of visitors coming to the island. The Taoyuan, Taichung, Kaohsiung, Tainan, Chiayi, Pingtung airports have the longest run-ways on the island with many of them having run-ways crossing the 3,047meter mark. The other airports range from between 3,047m to under 914m. Popular airlines with their base in Taiwan are China airlines and EVA air.
